The Brief

During the course of our major project, we were given a short 2-week project for Belfast Design week. A representative from Jameson Whiskey came into the studio to pitch the problem statement that they were wanting to solve. Jameson was looking to create a locally inspired cocktail that would connect with Belfast and Northern Ireland that use ingredients from the local area.

Our Goal

To produce a digital product or service that would assist Jameson in achieving their overall goal of a locally inspired cocktail. In addition to this Jameson stimulated that they wanted to change the image of what a typical whiskey drinker looks like. From an old-fashioned drink that is people normally drink alone to something that is more sociable, modern, and above all fun that would appeal to younger adults to drink whiskey.

Research

To start off with I did some preliminary research around the Jameson company to better understand the brand, its heritage, and why people drink it over other brands. From this, I learned that the company is very forward-thinking and wants to change how whiskey is perceived by improving the overall experience of drinking whiskey.

Jameson attracts a wide range of audiences, even a younger demographic than typical Whiskey drinkers. They are fans of the product because of the brand personality, the overall taste, and the price point compared to other leading brands.

However, they felt that they can do more. During the pandemic, the company had to explore how they could educate people about Jameson. Previously they were able to go to festivals and engage with their consumers about their whiskey, but COVID prevented this from happening. They decided to create a Virtual Tasting. A live-streamed tour of our Bow St. home in Ireland, and through broadcast it through their social media platforms for the world to see.

They want to inspire a younger generation to come together over a glass of whiskey and share their own story.

Idea Generation

Next, I did some benchmarking to look at what was currently out there on the market that was associated with drinking. The majority of the products I found were instructions to build cocktails or generic mini-games which forced the user to drink as a forfeit. I then got all my initial thoughts on the brief onto paper, breaking down the requirements into sections and exploring where these thoughts would lead to.
